Time for leaders to put menopause on the agenda

Employers' efforts to increase women's representation in the workforce are largely ignoring one critical life event that causes many of them to leave, a wellbeing and productivity coach says.

"Post-menopausal women make kick-ass leaders," Menopause at Work APAC founder Thea O'Connor tells HR Daily.

"They can just be more in their authority than ever before, less people-pleasing, say what they think. [They're] an incredible resource for humanity and organisations, and not just for 'grandmothering'."

But the problem lies in "a sheer timing perspective", she notes. "For an individual woman herself, menopause and that stage in their career when they're ready to stand up into leadership can coincide..."
