Manager entitled to compensation for hasty, "transactional" redundancy

An employer acted with "undignified haste" when making a manager redundant, with no attempt to offer him one of three available redeployment options, the Fair Work Commission has found.

The former graphics manager worked for memorial plaque manufacturer Arrow Bronze from May 2017 until March this year, when he was told that his was the only position not included in a new organisational structure.

The manager accepted redundancy two days later but subsequently claimed unfair dismissal.

He said he was informed of the restructure in a five-minute meeting where the word 'consult' was never mentioned, and where he was told: "As you can see, your position has now been made redundant"...
