Loyal employees 'annoyed' by inflated new-hire salaries

Employers risk disenfranchising loyal employees by exaggerating the salaries of new hires, and it's already starting to "annoy" some, an HR advisor warns.

"New hires are coming in on inflated salaries with not much in the way of experience," and it's "feeding resentment" among loyal employees who believe they stepped up during the pandemic, says Gartner HR vice president Aaron McEwan.

Even if this weren't the case, talk of a possible recession means HR "in particular" is going to have to start tightening its belt, he tells HR Daily.

"A pretty quick way of tightening your belt is not overpaying for talent, but we get the struggle because there's a chronic shortage of skilled and unskilled labour..."
