Lack of investigation or warnings made dismissal unfair

An employer that sacked a worker for "flagrant and continuing" dishonesty has been ordered to pay him $33k in compensation, after it failed to address his behaviour while he was employed.

In unfair dismissal proceedings, the employer Drewmaster, which operates the Palmer Coolum Resort, claimed that it summarily dismissed the principal plumbing contractor for dishonestly filling out at least 25 purchase approval forms.

It alleged that the employee provided quotes for certain items that did not match the subsequent invoices, and that he was concealing purchases...
