"Competency trap" limiting employees' career potential

Some employees are getting stuck in a "competency trap", where they perform so well in their roles that it stifles their future career opportunities, a leadership expert says.

This phenomenon seems to affect women in particular, when they work really hard to excel in their position but in the process become "too busy to put their hand up for another role", says Women & Leadership Australia (WLA) CEO Suzi Finkelstein.

Another way this manifests is when leaders say they can't offer them a different role because they "can't go without them", she tells HR Daily.

"There's a risk of them stepping up..."
