Manager wanted "nothing more" than for employee to perform well

An underperforming employee has failed to prove he was forced to resign, with the Fair Work Commission accepting his manager was genuinely trying to "get the best out of him".

The employee, a senior cloud engineer for ANZ Bank, had enquired about a role change as he was interested in a leadership position, and he considered the work in his current role didn't align with where he thought his career should be heading.

But, ANZ's technology leader identified a number of performance issues, including a "ticket" task that had not progressed for six weeks, and took the view that these would need to be addressed before any internal moves could take place.

After he was allocated another ticket task, which he failed to action in a timely manner, the employee's line manager initiated informal performance management action, and later, recommended a formal coaching process...
