Testing policies need rethink amid ongoing RAT issues

With unions calling for employers to manage workers' health and safety using rapid antigen tests and improved masks, an employment lawyer outlines some important issues to consider upfront.

ACTU leaders have discussed how government 'let it rip' policies are failing both workers and employers, with unions condemning the Federal Government's lack of response to their demands for free rapid antigen tests (RATs), improved masks and amended close-contact definitions.

The unions say employers need to update their workplace health and safety measures for managing COVID, which will involve undertaking new risk assessments for the Omicron variant.

And for workplaces where remote work isn't an option, employers should provide free RATs – once supply issues are resolved – as well as upgraded masks and improved ventilation, they say.
