Stress management requires "varied and individual" approach

Strategies used by elite athletes and the defence force are now helping employees perform under pressure in all manner of workplaces.

Years of research and programs to help these groups shows that everyone experiences stress in a different way, but there is a "toolbox" that can be used to moderate it, Dr Jemma King tells HR Daily.

King is a stress and emotional intelligence expert with a PhD from the University of Queensland Business School, and recently worked with the Australian Defence Force to tailor a pre-deployment 'Performance Optimisation Program' to help soldiers develop pre-emptive tactics to moderate stress.

Stress responses are "very individual", she notes, pointing out that what may be a stressor for someone, such as public speaking, can actually be invigorating for others...
